First Feels Good
By: Ted Schuman, PlanetOne Founder & CEO
Last year, in the height of COVID, like many others I decided to do a garage clean-out. Through the cobwebs I found some boxes of childhood memorabilia, including the trophy photographed above.
It was 1972 and I won my first-place trophy in the Punt, Pass and Kick competition in Novato, California. I was ten years old and remember the event – and especially the win – like it was yesterday. I also vividly recall what it felt like to work hard, WIN and take first place. I would stare at this trophy on my dresser, and it always inspired me and made me feel good. I worked hard to win that competition and I earned it.
It also made me think of the years I coached youth sports and the countless trophies we gave away for participation. I was always against awarding participation, but the parents wanted it. I feel that we’ve done many younger people a disservice by giving them trophies when they didn’t earn it or deserve it.
Failure is okay. We should learn valuable life lessons from it. If you don’t like finishing second, or last, work harder and get better!
We instill these values in our team here at PlanetOne, day in and day out. We’re the best in the business because we grind. We’re crushing quota again and again, selling results and driving revenue for our partners.
I’m proud to say that we’re keeping the trophies alive here at PlanetOne in the form of a Thor’s Hammer for the Annual Werp/Clark Awards, which honor operations staff members for exceptional performance and nothing less. Why Thor’s Hammer? Well, nothing’s cooler than a big ass hammer, especially when you’ve really earned it.
