WFA is Fine, but WFH Sucks!
By: Ted Schuman, PlanetOne Founder & CEO
I’ll say it. I’m done working from home. Maybe it’s because I’m 58 and have been going into an office for my entire career. I’ve missed the noise, my coworkers, hearing them celebrate and being right down the hall from them when they need help.
You can’t create a culture from behind a keyboard or on video calls. Further, the conversations that happen remotely between employees and suppliers do not hold the same value as in-person interactions. With each passing day, the communication gaps become wider. After a year of professional isolation, we’re missing out on the social interactions that makes us human and business personal. You can’t field a baseball team virtually, and the same holds true in business. I know this because I am an old school coach — I want to be there in the dugout to help my team when I see an opportunity to coach or pat team members on the back, or just have a mentoring moment.
Many are saying, “We’re more productive at home.” I understand there is an argument for that, and yet it comes at a price. I believe in investing in safe, face-to-face interaction which increases networking opportunities, improves relationships, elevates company culture and spurs more creative content.
I am stoked that we’ve been able to return to how we used to do business here at PlanetOne. Couldn’t have happened fast enough for this old coach.
