What has your master agent done for you lately?

Last year, I posted about this topic on LinkedIn and received over 10,000 views. Obviously a hot topic, and the sentiment still rings true.
The term “master agent” first came into my radar in 1994. No one knew what the hell it meant, but it stuck. At the time, you were either an agent or a master agent. Fast forward to today, and the lines have blurred. You’ve got MSPs acting like agents, agents acting like MSPs, some agents even being distis, and better yet, some distis buying agents.
When you take a hard look at master agents today, the quality varies. Big time.
So…how do you know if you’re working with a top-quality master agent?
Check your contract. Is your master agent paying you 90% or higher? If the answer is yes, RUN! This type of setup reeks of desperation and it’s highly likely that your master agent is being fiscally reckless with your money. These types of “master agents” are nothing more than a badly run clearinghouse for a check.
With this setup, there is ZERO margin in it for the Master Agent. If they are willing to do this, I assure you they are making other bad decisions in their business, and do not have your best interests in mind.
